		<description>

Conditions matter.

I work from the belief that nothing we move through is neutral. My practice investigates how perception is

shaped through color, surface, and material, with particular attention to the moments when recognition

begins to falter. I am less interested in what an image represents than in how it comes into being, and how

long it can resist settling into something fully known.

Working primarily in painting, I build surfaces through staining, layering, and erasure, allowing forms to

emerge gradually rather than be imposed. Figures appear, but they do not fully resolve. They hover within

fields of color and residue, held in a state of partial legibility. In this way, the body is not depicted as a fixed

image, but encountered as something sensed, contingent, and unstable.

Color functions as both structure and disruption. It carries the weight of the figure while simultaneously

dispersing it, creating pressure between what is seen and what can be held. I am interested in how material

behaves over time, how it absorbs, resists, and reveals, and how these behaviors shape the conditions of

looking. Drips, stains, and shifts in opacity are not incidental but integral, marking the painting as a site

where meaning is delayed rather than delivered.

My work resists the assumption that seeing produces understanding. Instead, it asks what it means to

remain with an image that does not fully resolve, where recognition is incomplete and continually

renegotiated. Within this space, the act of looking becomes durational, and meaning emerges not through

immediate clarity, but through sustained attention.Kimberly R. Heard is a research based visual artist working across painting, sculpture, and installation. Her practice investigates how perception is conditioned by the environments bodies move through, attending to moments when visual recognition gives way to more diffuse forms of sensing. Through fragmentation, coded imagery, and layered material processes, she explores how color, surface, and structure can hold multiple temporal and affective states within a single image.

Heard is currently completing her MFA in Painting at the Yale School of Art. She is the recipient of the 2025 Robert Schoelkopf Memorial Traveling Fellowship and a 2026 nominee for the AICAD Post Graduate Teaching Fellowship. Her work has been exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego, Bread &#38;amp; Salt Gallery, and as part of PST ART: Art &#38;amp; Science Collide. Her work is included in the City of San Diego Civic Art Collection. Heard has delivered artist lectures at&#38;nbsp;Colorado State University,&#38;nbsp;Eastern Connecticut State University, and the University of California, San Diego.
She enjoys quietude, home-cooked meals, zinemaking, and the sound that leaves make when they encounter rain.
